Why Choose Norck for Wire EDM?
It is a thermal cutting process of metal parts using a high voltage electrical discharge, hence the name EDM (Electrical discharge machining). In this technique, electrical discharges (sparks) heat a metallic shape that engraves through the workpiece.
EDM offers more advantages over traditional cutting methods:
• Accuracy: EDM offers high tolerances and is more accurate than laser and waterjet cutting.
• Clean cuts: There is no impact on the material. Thus, no material deformation and no need for post-processing.
• Material thickness: This process cuts through thick and thin materials. And since the material has no impact, it can cut ductile and brittle materials. The downside is that it can cut only conductive materials
• Cost-effective: The cutting tool (wire) is about 0.2mm, and the cut has no wasted material, making this process very cost-effective.
• Complex shapes: EDM machines can quickly form simple or complex shapes. It is an efficient process but requires well-trained staff to operate and program the machines.
The first step is to make a hole in the material then the cutting wire is fed through. The cutting wire comes in a wire coil and passes through the material to be collected in another wire coil.
The wire EDM machine uses electrical discharges between the wire (the electrode) and the working piece, as the discharges (sparks) remove material where the wire meets the working piece. To prevent wire wear, we use deionized or dielectric fluid. The wire EDM machine uses a CNC to control the trajectory of the cut.
Wire EDM cut can deviate from the normal of the working piece to make cuts at angles. This process can’t make threads.
The working piece is put into a tank and submerged in a deionized or dielectric fluid to prevent tool wear. The EDM machine uses electrical discharges between a forming tool and the working piece, as the discharges (sparks) remove material where the forming tool meets the working piece.
The material of the forming tool is graphite or copper, which has the complementary shape of the desired body. The EDM machine uses a CNC to control the trajectory of the cut.
EDM engraving can’t have undercuts, and it can’t make threads. Desired shapes shouldn’t include any undercuts or threads.
